Transcendental
Meditation
Transcendental Meditation was brought to the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in the 1950s. He had utter conviction, after exploring all other methods and studying physics, and then finding Guru Dev – who restored the proper understanding of meditation – that this technique of transcending was the one missing element in human life, that was needed ‘to rehabilitate mankind’.
He encouraged scientific research on the technique because he was sure that, far from being a philosophy, mental discipline, devotional practice, or simple relaxation, it enabled a distinctive, natural physiological response to take place that counteracted stress, facilitating full personal development.
Maharishi Foundation is the one official organisation in the UK that teaches the authentic Transcendental Meditation of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Officially approved teachers today teach in exactly the same way, so the purity of the teaching is being preserved. This is why it continues to deliver results – both for the individual and for society. Maharishi Foundation® is a registered educational charity: number 270157 (England and Wales) XR20456 (Northern Ireland) and SC041919 (Scotland).
Transcendental Meditation Twickenham operates under the auspices of Maharishi Foundation.
A list of certified teachers in the UK can be found online and teaching centres can be located on their national website. Enquiries can be addressed to ukenquiries@tm.org (01695 51213 9am – 4pm Monday to Thursday).

Learn Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation, as founded by Maharishi, is a simple, effective mental technique which allows the mind to transcend and settle to the simplest, most powerful state of awareness. It does not involve any effort, mental control or active thought process. It is practised silently with eyes closed and sitting comfortably.
What TM is not: TM is not a religion, there is no concentration, it does not involve ‘clearing the mind’, focusing on breathing or mindfulness.

Evidence-based Benefits of Transcendental Meditation
Transcendental Meditation helps unfold the full potential of life and extensive research has found it reduces stress and anxiety resulting in more inner peace, creativity, better health, better sleep, greater success and happiness, improved personal and professional relationships, higher states of consciousness and more.
Stress – which hinders creative thinking, full personal development and dynamic activity – is naturally dissolved, resulting in the above mentioned benefits, thereby giving more fullness of life leading ultimately to higher states of consciousness or ‘enlightenment’.

Local Certified Teacher of TM
Charles Cunningham learned Transcendental Meditation at the age of 17 and has been doing it ever since. He helped set up a student meditation society at Manchester University, and after graduating in Experimental Psychology, he worked as a Research Assistant in Switzerland investigating the psychophysiological effects of TM in advanced practitioners. He was also lucky enough to attend select meetings with Maharishi over an extended period.
Charles then trained as a Teacher of Transcendental Meditation in between working as a systems analyst in the IT industry for some years. He has now enjoyed teaching TM full-time for 35 years to almost 3,000 people, largely in and around London. He has taught referrals from a psychiatric hospital, and used the technique to help post-traumatic stress victims as part of an international aid team. After gaining an MSc in Health Promotion, he conducted research at St George’s Hospital in London on the effects of TM on cardiovascular disease, and taught TM to GPs under the Post-Graduate Continuing Education programme.
Charles loves nothing more than sharing what he considers to be the very greatest gift – a simple technique to access the limitless intelligence of nature at the source of mind and body, and to unfold the fullest potential of consciousness.
Authentic Tradition
Before Maharishi Mahesh Yogi passed away he planned the future of the International Transcendental Meditation (TM) organisations. He chose Dr Tony Nader to be the next in line of this Vedic Tradition, as he was both a master of modern science, as a medical doctor and neuroscientist, and an accomplished Vedic scholar.

Free introduction, and learning Transcendental Meditation
Free introductory talks on Transcendental Meditation are held regularly over Zoom.
The course to learn the technique can be taken in two different ways.
- In person over four consecutive days, with one-to-one personal instruction on day one, followed by group meetings on the next three days with others learning the same weekend, all in Charles’s home.
- If timings or travel are an issue, after the first in-person one-to-one session, you can watch a digital course on your phone or tablet in your own time; and check in with the Teacher on Zoom to verify your practice is good. This can either take the place of all, or any one of, the in-person group sessions
